“Gage is going to freak the hell out when he realizes you’re not in your room,” Alicia sang out as she leaned against her car that was parked beside mine.

“He hasn’t let me fucking breathe this week,” I grumbled as I got into her car. “I need a break.”

Alicia got inside and started the engine. “Everyone has been quiet this week.”

She was right. Besides having Gage shadow my every move, the last six days had been the calmest all year. Jace and Kian were keeping their distance. Neither of them had said a word to me since the night at The Pit. Both gave Gage glares whenever they were in the same room, but it never went farther than that. I could tell Gage was still pissed about what happened, and I was surprised he hadn’t retaliated other than attacking Jace. Maybe they were all biding their time.

Tonight, I wasn’t going to worry about any of it. I was having a girls’ night out with Alicia off campus. There was a county fair happening right outside of Little Haven, and I hadn’t been to it yet this year. Alicia and I had gone the last two years, and we’d always had fun. Although this time, my stomach was jumbled with nerves. I glanced back at the dorms as Alicia drove away, wondering how long it would take Gage to realize I’d given him the slip. I’d left a note telling him I was fine, but I wasn’t sure that would help much once he found my room empty.

Oh well. He’d get over it. Maybe if he wasn’t stalking me everywhere but the bathroom, I would have been nicer and told him where I was going. He wasn’t acting like a bodyguard—he was trying to control every little thing I did. Even if Ellie had ordered him here, I wasn’t about to lose my free will. Not after I’d worked so hard over the last three years to get here.

“Do you have everything under control?” Alicia asked softly as we headed toward the opposite side of town.

I sighed, sagging in the seat. “For now, I do.”

“You know my dad is already gearing up for this election, even though it’s months away.”

“I figured he would be.”

“He’s going to do everything to win.”

“I know.”

She gripped the steering wheel tighter. “I don’t want him to win, Rynn.”

I didn’t answer because she flicked on the radio, signaling that she was done talking about it. Sometimes I forgot I wasn’t the only one working toward an end goal. Although her reasoning for helping me was about as unselfish as someone could get. In her eyes. I was sure her father would feel differently.

We got to the fair, and excitement rushed through me at the neon lights brightening the sky. Every time we came here, we left with fun memories. I lived for the busy and festive atmosphere. It reminded me of my childhood.

Once we got out of the car, Alicia linked her arm with mine. “Food first.
